Twice a year, the Australian Boys Choir holds a very special event that is attended by the entire choir community – our ‘Installations‘, the second for 2018 was held on Sunday 18th of November.
Installations are when we recognise musical achievement. Boys who have achieved the requisite musical and personal skills are installed in the next level of training group. The journey begins with Probationers who have been accepted as Tyros, the first level of training with the choir, encouraging aural development and music reading skills as well as vocal development. With hard work, they may progress on to become Junior Singers.
Junior Singer training builds on the basics with more emphasis on vocal technique and music reading skills. Performance skills become important at this level.
When boys advance to become Senior Singers, they are eligible to be selected for the Performing Squad. This involves a more rigorous schedule of rehearsals, concentrating on performance skills, while continuing to broaden their own musical skills and experience.
The highest rank is that of Chorister. It is a tremendous honour to achieve this level and it is a prerequisite for joining the Kelly Gang, the choir’s secondary school age choir for changed voices.
Each boy progresses through the training levels at his own rate, gaining not only musical knowledge and skills, but also growing in confidence and personal independence. A feature of the Australian Boys Choir is the unique ‘career path’ for boys after their voices change: Cambiata and the Kelly Gang for those of secondary school age and The Vocal Consort for young adults.
The following boys were installed at the November 2018 ceremony:
James, Harry, Oliver, Duc, Owen and Ethan
Marcus, Nicholas, Harvey, Dante, Brendan, Charlie, Alexis, Ryan

The Australian Boys Choir depends on an extensive network of volunteers, led by a dedicated team of volunteer team leaders. Installations are when our outgoing volunteer team leaders are also recognised and thanked for their outstanding contribution, which is often provided over many, many years. Joanna Mitchell, Louise Phillips, Judy Taylor and Katie Whitecross were all thanked for their incredible contributions at the ceremony.
All of the Choir’s training groups perform at Installations, so newer members of our community have the opportunity to see and hear what it is possible to achieve.
And the grand finale is afternoon tea – delicious treats and catching up with special friends!
