MORE SINGERS AND MORE SONGS: ABCI SEASON 2023 PREVIEW

It's that time of the year where major Arts organisations unveil their plans for the following year, and the Australian Boys Choir is no exception.

According to ABCI Artistic Director Nick Dinopoulos, this year's season is bigger than ever and is set to include "even more singers and more songs".

"Our 2023 program will be a celebration of everything that's wonderful about singing, especially singing that's shared in community."

"Last year's concert season was one of musical travels, the first in ABCI history to be themed" Mr Dinopoulos says, "So I just had to follow it up with something just as good that really plays to the strengths of our young singers."

After their debut in 2022 on Australian Digital Concert Hall, the partnership is set to continue with a series of four livestream events for a global audience, including the Institute's popular Christmas Concert live from Melbourne Recital Centre.

“I was absolutely honoured when asked by the Digital Concert Hall's directors Chris Howlett and Adele Schonhardt if the ABCI would like to continue our partnership in 2023. It's only a small, select group of artists included on ADCH this year."

This year's season will start as last year's ended, with a full-Institute gala performance at Deakin Edge at Federation Square, headlined by The Vocal Consort. This will be the first time in some years that the ABCI has performed at the venue, renowned for it's glasshouse feel and beautiful Yarra views.

"Our singers have missed out on so many opportunities over the past few years, especially the younger ones" Mr Dinopoulos recounts. "It's partially an opportunity to make up for lost time, but we know that singers learn so much from those who are just that little bit older than they are. Almost every program in next year's season will include some sort of element of massed singing, so even the youngest ABCI singers can enjoy the thrill of live performance and benefit from continuing to grow their skills in this way."

The rest of the season will also expand the ABCI's recent collaborations, with some terrific guest artists and the opportunity to perform in two of the country's most magnificent Cathedrals in August. The organisation will also finally realise it's long-postponed collaboration with the Melbourne Baroque Orchestra, who will join the singers of the Performing Squad and The Vocal Consort on period instruments and gut strings for the the sparkling Missa Brevis in A Major BWV 234 by J.S. Bach at Melbourne Recital Centre in December.

Audiences can also expect a strong old boy representation too, says Mr Dinopoulos: "Our alumni are simply incredible. Some of them have gone on to do just brilliant things both here at home and abroad, and not just in music of course."
