INTERVIEW WITH SQUAD MEMBER YEVAN

Yevan is a Senior Singer in the Australian Boys Choir Performing Squad. He is excited to be performing as part of the Australian Boys Choral Institute 2023 Season Opening Gala ‘Songs for the Open Road’ on March 19 at Deakin Edge, alongside The Vocal Consort and the Training Choirs of the ABCI.

Yevan, when did you join the ABCI?
I joined the ABCI in June 2018. Little did I know, how much of a major part of my life the choir would become.

What do you enjoy most about coming to Choir?
I enjoy all the opportunities the choir has to offer and it is nice to meet like-minded people.

What is one of the most important things you've learned in the ABCI about being a singer?
One of the most important things I have learnt in choir is solfa. This has helped me with to learn pieces on all sorts of different instruments. Being able to sing a piece for say, piano can help me memorise the song.

What are you most looking forward to about 'Songs for the Open Road' at Deakin Edge?
I am really looking forward to seeing the beautiful backdrop of the Yarra River that Deakin Edge offers, as well as singing on a glass balcony.

What's rewarding about singing choral music?
Something that is really rewarding about singing choral music is the fact that some songs we sing are hundreds of years old. It is hard to believe that some of the music we sing has been thought of hundreds of years ago.

What is the Vocal Consort like behind-the-scenes?
They are like grown up Choristers. Sometimes they are really serious, but mostly they are fun to be around.

Who are your favourite singers and why?
My favourite singer is Liam who is a Chorister. I admire him because of his ability to harmonic sing (singing two notes at the same time). I must admit I have been practising my harmonic singing, but it was not good at all. Liam told me to move my tongue less which really helped me.

What do you hope to do with your singing after you move on from the Performing Squad?
I hope to stay with the Australian Boys Choir for as long as I can, and maybe even sing as a part of TVC.

What advice do you have for boys hoping to make it to the rank of Senior Singer?
My advice to boys who are aiming to become a Senior Singer, is to keep persevering. There will be times when you will want to quit, but keep going. Trust me, it is worth it.
