Jeevantha is a Senior Singer in the Australian Boys Choir Performing Squad. He is thrilled to be performing in the first instalment of the ABCI’s 85th anniversary concert season in 2024. ‘Sweet & Low’ will be performed on March 16 & 17 in both Ballarat and Melbourne. Please see www.australianboyschoir.com.au/whats-on/concerts for more information.
Jeevantha, when did you join the ABCI?
I was delighted to join the ABCI when I was eight years old in 2018.
What do you enjoy most about coming to Choir?
I really enjoy the camaraderie and the bonds I have formed with the other singers, as well as the exceptional teaching and support I receive.
How is choir different from school?
I am fortunate to have a very strong choral program to be part of at my school, however, the choral training is even more more rigorous and at a particularly exceptional level at the ABCI. Also, you get to travel and perform in many interesting locations, particularly around Victoria, at quite a young age.
What are you most looking forward to about this year's first concert of the year?
We are all buzzing this year at the ABCI, as it is the organisation’s 85th Anniversary, and so it will be particularly exciting to perform at the upcoming ‘Sweet and Low’ concerts. I am also really looking forward to sharing the stage with all the different training choirs as well as The Vocal Consort, and travelling by train with the boys to Ballarat!
What's rewarding about singing in a choir?
The collective output and incredibly beautiful sound created by being part of a choir is thrilling, and much more fun than singing alone.
Who are your favourite singers and why?
There are so many wonderful and talented singers at the ABCI, that it is hard to choose a particular person, though I particularly admire the skills of the Choristers.
What about your hobbies and activities outside singing?
I enjoy many sports, including rowing, tennis, cricket, skiing and running. I love spending time with my family, and especially my younger brother Nishantha.
What do you hope to do with your singing after you move on from the Performing Squad?
I really hope to stay involved in the ABCI, and would love to move on to the Kelly Gang after my time in the Performing Squad.
What is the most important thing you’ve learnt in the ABCI about being a singer?
I have learnt the value of discipline, time management and organisation, and the importance of being a good team player to both enjoy and excel in singing.
Lastly, what advice do you have for boys hoping to make it to the rank of Senior Singer? Click below to watch members of the ABCI in an excerpt from our August 2023 concert 'Sing Joyfully' at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
The opportunity to become a Senior Senior is really special, and I would encourage all junior boys to remain engaged and keep working steadily with their teachers and the other boys to improve their skill and proficiency so that they get to this level one day.
