The moments that shape you...

I will never forget walking off stage that day.

On a sweltering equatorial afternoon, an enthusiastic audience gathered in a makeshift concert hall on the top floor of an unassuming high-rise in the middle of Johor Bahru, Malaysia. After sweating through a challenging program, the Australian Boys Choir concluded its concert with the Javanese folk song Bengawan Solo. The audience erupted. Shouts of praise and calls for encores endured for what seemed like an eternity.

And we were only just getting started on our tour.

The sense of accomplishment. The acknowledgement of hard work. The immense pride of a shared community.

I am incredibly fortunate to have travelled on an astonishing 23-year journey in the Australian Boys Choral Institute starting as a Probationer and now serving as the Assistant Artistic Director. It was moments like that Singapore-Malaysia tour back in 2007 that completely transformed what would have otherwise been a relatively normal childhood into something extraordinary.

These moments do not just materialise out of thin air. An army of volunteers and an indefatigable staff dedicate countless hours towards enriching the life of the Institute. It is truly an incredible intersection of passion, perseverance, and painstaking work.

Against all odds, the Institute remains a shining beacon of integrity and distinction, and the epitome of excellence in choral education for young men.

It is imperative that this organisation not only survives, but flourishes and creates, creating even more exceptional opportunities for the next generation of Australian singers.
