MOTHER / SON INTERVIEW: PARENT EE & SENIOR SINGER CLEMENT

Ee and her Senior Singer son Clement are members of the Australian Boys Choir community. In this interview, they share some perspectives on their time so far with the Australian Boys Choral Institute and talk a little but about the Choir journey. Clement, when did you join the ABCI?
I joined the choir in 2020 when I was 8 years old. It was hard because of lockdown and we had to sing over Zoom.
What do you enjoy most about coming to Choir?
Singing with the choir, and learning famous, beautiful pieces.
What have been some favourite pieces you have performed with the ABCI?
With the ABCI, my favourite pieces I’ve performed have definitely been Bach's passions. I look forward to singing the St Matthew Passion in early 2027.
Can you tell us a bit about your hobbies and activities outside singing?
I like reading a lot, specifically fantasy and fusion fantasy.
What are the older boys like outside rehearsals?
I have made a lot of friends at choir, older and younger. I like that I can talk and sing with them about choir songs. We got to go on the New Zealand tour together and that was a lot of fun!
Lastly, what advice do you have for boys hoping to make it to the rank of Senior Singer?
Just give it a go, it's a great experience. Also, make sure to work on your skills at home.
Ee, how did your family come to be part of the ABCI?
We first became aware of the ABCI when his friend joined the choir. He came to the auditions with the promise of a cupcake! Once we learnt more about the program, it felt like an opportunity for a good musical education, but also experiences and friendships outside of school.
How have you found Choir to be different from school?
The Choir is quite different from school because everyone comes together with a shared musical passion. There is a real sense of belonging and teamwork.
Does your family have a musical background?
Not particularly! It has been lovely to experience the world of choral music alongside Clement. We have appreciated choral music much more and we have loved seeing his passion for music develop.
What have been the most beneficial aspects of pursuing an ABCI education in your view?
For me, it is the confidence and self-reliance, teamwork and friendships that he has gained.
Most importantly, the ABCI has given him something that is his own - being the youngest of three - choir is his own unique community where he belongs and can grow.
What’s been the most memorable Institute concert you have experienced so far and why?
Every year I look forward to Christmas concert at the Melbourne Recital Hall. It is a chance to see the whole choir and the carols are beautiful.
What advice would you give to new families, or those looking to join the Choir?
Give it a go and embrace the experience. It can seem a little daunting at first, particularly when you see the level of commitment involved, but the rewards are enormous.
