DIARY EXCERPTS FROM A PARENT CARER

Friday 28 June – Arrived Penang 1am. After 11 hour journey, the boys still broke into song on bus

Monday 1 July - Slow start - no coffee for caring staff! Choir relished football with locals from Penang’s Prince of Wales Island International School, then settled into rehearsal.

Wednesday 3 July - Combined afternoon workshop with Sam Tet Voices in Ipoh. Evening concert well received - audience over 2,500. Gifts exchanged - boys from Sam Tet Voices left with koalas clipped to their ties!

Friday 5 July - After first night billeting with Kuala Lumpur families, boys hadn’t missed us at all! Next, a tour highlight - exquisite afternoon performance at Australian Embassy, a mix of Australian and Malaysian works. Boys were pros mingling with dignitaries and Deputy High Commissioner. From the sublime to the ridiculous, the ‘Australian Boys Choir On Ice’ evening performance at Sunway Pyramid Mall, where mobs of ice-skaters circled them like sharks. Boys loved it.

Sunday 7 July - Performed at KL Shopping Centre ‘The Curve’ for ‘Australia Week’. Caring staff gave in to the boys’ pleas to spend pocket money. No store left unturned.

Tuesday 9 July - The boys enjoyed Mari Mari Cultural Village, Kota Kinabalu, trying their hands at starting fires with bamboo, shooting warrior’s blow dart at a coconut etc. In the evening, several local choirs gathered at Kian Kok Middle School, Kota Kinabalu, for a choral exchange.

Thursday 11 July - Very early flight back to Melbourne. Boys falling asleep. A great tour had by all.
