INTERVIEW WITH SQUAD MEMBER JONAH

Jonah is a Senior Singer in the Australian Boys Choir Performing Squad. He is thrilled to be performing in this year’s mid-season gala as part of the ABCI’s 85th anniversary concert season in 2024. ‘Mystical Songs’ will be performed on August 3 & 4 in both Ballarat and Melbourne. Please see www.australianboyschoir.com.au/whats-on/concerts for more information.

Jonah, when did you join the ABCI?
I started halfway through 2018, when I was in Grade 2.

What do you enjoy most about coming to Choir?
The thing I enjoy most about Choir is getting to sing such interesting and challenging songs.

How is choir different from school?
Choir is different from school because it’s a group where everyone wants to be there, and we all work together as one big group to learn.

What are you most looking forward to about our next concert?
I’m looking forward to singing cool music in front of an audience.

What's rewarding about singing in a choir?
Choir is rewarding because you get to work with the rest of the group and then perform all the fun stuff we’ve worked hard to learn.

What about your hobbies and activities outside singing?
Outside of Choir I enjoy riding my bike, playing the flute, and gaming and board games by myself and with my friends and family.

What do you hope to do with your singing after you move on from the Performing Squad?
I haven’t really thought about what I want to do with my singing, but probably just singing for fun, besides hopefully moving on to The Kelly Gang.

What is the most important thing you’ve learnt in the ABCI about being a singer?
The most important thing that I’ve learnt about being a singer is that everyone should be a leader.

Lastly, what advice do you have for boys hoping to make it to the rank of Senior Singer?
My advice to boys trying to become Senior Singers is to try hard, and be confident even if you make mistakes.
