MUSIC AND MENTAL WELLBEING

Melbourne’s recent lockdown has been a thought-provoking time, to say the least. Some have struggled with social isolation, but others have thrived on the simplicity of staying home, not needing to rush around. Still, most of us feel some degree of anxiety when faced with uncertainty.

How were we going to keep our children occupied and entertained during lockdown? Many activities and sports had been cancelled: basketball, football, swimming. I was concerned for our son. He sang in two choirs and either performed or rehearsed six days a week. How would he cope, moving from singing virtually everyday to almost nothing?

Thankfully, the Australian Boys Choir did some quick thinking earlier in the year and moved our son’s twice-weekly choir sessions to an online platform in a remarkably short space of time. He could continue with an activity that brings him so much joy.

What is it about choral singing that makes people happy? It’s all to do with the body’s release of chemicals when we sing. Singing releases chemicals in the brain that are associated with improved mood and decreased stress. Similar to strenuous physical activity, when we sing our bodies release endorphins, resulting in enhanced energy and mood. By singing (and exercising) regularly, one’s emotional state can be significantly improved as the brain produces these mood-enhancing substances which, in turn, reduce the stress hormone cortisol.

As for our singers? Zoom sing-a-longs, where the ABCI community comes together, have been a highlight of the week. It’s a little different than what we are used to; definitely not as good as seeing each other at Choir House, but in these uncertain and truly remarkable times, it’s been the next best thing.
