Q&A WITH NAOMI HEYDEN, DIRECTOR OF TRAINING CHOIRS

How long have you been involved with the choir, and why did you choose to teach with us?
To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure what was involved when I applied for a tutoring position! This was on the recommendation of a friend who was an ABCI tutor at the time. That was 2001... apart from a few years off here and there, I've been working at the ABCI ever since.

What does your role involve?
Currently my role is Director of Training Choirs as well as Teacher-in-Charge of our Junior Singer groups. Having also taught the Tyros for many years, I guess I am well-placed for a position that focuses on our students in training! I've also taught the Probationers and facilitated some Early Learner's classes as part of this new ABCI program.

What do you do when you aren't working at choir?
I also take Music and Choir at a couple of schools, so my week is a mix of teaching and getting my own children to their activities. I do occasional other choral conducting work, and although I'm not involved in any ensembles myself at the moment, I hope to fit that in again at some point when the jigsaw allows!

What is your most cherished and worst choir memory?
Any moment where the hard work of our students and staff pays off is rewarding, whether that's a group performance or an individual's progress. Worst memory - a particularly chaotic session of organising 5000 of our younger singers (I'm sure there were that many), and their performance folders is something I can laugh about now (well, almost)...

Think back to one of your favourite choir performances - how did it make you feel and why?
The sense of occasion at our Institute-wide Christmas concerts is always special. There might be some hectic moments, but the huge team involves manages it well. We will all miss it this year (along with my excuse to buy a new dress), and I can't wait for the next one!

Why would you recommend the choir to prospective parents and children?
For a child with interest and aptitude, it can offer them an excellent musical education, exciting opportunities, and a real sense of belonging.

What is your top audition tip?
There's no need to prepare anything in advance, but be ready to join in, have a good sing, and just be yourself!

What are your long term goals?
I don't have significant long term goals thought out! I am lucky enough to enjoy all my work places. If I can continue to be happy in my job, and keep balancing my own career and family life, then that will do me for now.
