FROM THE CHAIR

What a wonderful year for singing it has been so far. We’ve been treated to a host of uplifting and inspiring concerts, topped off by an international tour to Aotearoa/New Zealand. All the while, our singers have learned new skills, perfected current skills and grown as both singers and individuals.

I was honoured to step into the role of Chair of the Board of Directors at our Annual General Meeting in May. As a past singer of many years, the ABCI has played such an important role in my life. I’m excited to have the opportunity to help guide us into the future. We have a fantastic group of volunteer Directors. They are all knowledgeable, committed and easy to work with. Further, the current ‘skill matrix’ on the Board is, in my view, optimal.

I wrote about our outgoing Chair in the July edition of Chant, but I’d like to repeat those words here. It is difficult to express the gratitude the ABCI owes to outgoing Chair, Professor Stephen Duffy. Over the past decade, Stephen has steered the Institute through some of its most challenging times with an abundance of honesty, understanding, generosity and professionalism. We have come out the other side with our inimitable Artistic Director and team of music and administrative staff. In a strong financial position, despite a global pandemic that prevented our singers from doing what they do best – coming together to sing. I sat next to Stephen at the ‘Voices of a Land’ concert and heard first-hand the kind words of members of our community, as they approached him with their thanks. Stephen has set the highest of standards that I can only hope to meet. I am grateful that he has agreed to stay on, at least for a little while, as a Director in support.

Looking forward, one of our main priorities as a Board is securing our premises for the long-term, whether that be at Auburn Uniting Church or elsewhere. Our needs as an organisation are unique and it’s important that our Choir House continues to serve them. We’re monitoring and shaping the expansion of our Early Learner and Probationer programs in suburbs around Melbourne. Paperwork-wise, we’re developing an organisation wide risk management framework to ensure that we’re prepared for anything the future may hold. Of course, in the meantime, we deal with all manner of ad hoc issues, as they arise.

I’m still yet to meet most of you… singers, parents, volunteers. I look forward to seeing you around and hearing your thoughts on how we can continue to support you and grow our community together.

Tim Staindl, ABCI Board Chair
