INTERVIEW WITH SQUAD MEMBER LIAM

Liam is a Senior Singer in the Australian Boys Choir Performing Squad. He is thrilled to be performing in the next exciting instalment of the 2023 ABCI Concert Season ‘Sing Joyfully’ on August 19 & 20 in both Bendigo and Melbourne.

Liam, when did you join the ABCI?
I joined the Choir in July 2019. I was eight years old and in Year 2.

What do you enjoy most about coming to Choir?
I enjoy learning new songs, improving my vocal technique and connecting with other boys like me in the Choir. I feel included and part of something amazing.

What is one of the most important things you've learned in the ABCI about being a singer?
I've learnt that my singing improves with practice and that I can learn so much from teachers, tutors and other singers within the Choir.

How is choir different from school?
In Choir everyone is respectful and helpful and it is a really friendly place. The Choir encourages working together across the different groups and other singers have helped me in developing my skills.

What are you most looking forward to about this next concert 'Sing Joyfully’?
I am looking forward to singing the piece by Andreas Hammerschmidt because it is a new language, German, and it sounds really cool. I like the chorus because all the parts blend really well (especially my part).

What's rewarding about singing in a choir?
Being part of this choir means being part of a supportive community. We share a common interest for music and a commitment to excellence. The sense of friendship and belonging that emerges from singing together is special.

What is The Vocal Consort like behind-the-scenes?
TVC are friendly and fun to be around. They feel like extra Choristers but with deeper voices. It is fun to sing with some of my tutors.

Who are your favourite singers and why?
Ed Sheeran because he makes music that I can sing along too. I went to his concert in March and sang and danced to all of his songs. If the MCG had had a roof he would have raised it. I also like that he was a choir boy too.

What about your hobbies and activities outside singing?
I enjoy playing video games with my friends, reading, playing soccer at school and hockey for the local club.

What do you hope to do with your singing after you move on from the Performing Squad?
I hope to go to the Kelly Gang or Cambiata so I can keep singing with this Choir and discover my new range.

What advice do you have for boys hoping to make it to the rank of Senior Singer?
Keep on trying, keep on working because being in the Squad is even better than you think. Ask for help from your group, your tutor or a friendly senior singer.
