An important part of the training program is our annual Summer School, an intensive residential camp that provides intensive musical training and develops independence and invaluable life skills.
In September and October 2018 the Australian Boys Choir traveled with a mixed group of our adult male choir, The Vocal Consort, and our teenage changed voices choir, The Kelly Gang, to Europe, encompassing Germany, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Highlight's included singing in Bach's church in Leipzig, Mozart's Cathedral in Salzburg and workshops with other local choirs.
Twenty-three of our singers performed to highly appreciative audiences in Adelaide, Mount Gambier & Warrnambool, also collaborating with Tenison Woods College and Young Adelaide Voices. A capacity crowd in Colac (not to mention some exceptional country hospitality!) saw the tour round out on exactly the right note.
One of the most surprising benefits of joining the Australian Boys Choir can be discovering that you're definitely not the only who likes to sing! A shared love of music, not to mention striving to achieve an amazing sound as a group, creates a feeling that is hard to beat.
We received a coveted four-star review from Limelight Magazine's Tony Way following our recent all-Australian program at Hawthorn Arts Centre featuring music by Iain Grandage, Clare Maclean, Matthew Orlovich and Timothy Mallis. Click below to read the full review.
"This was a courageous program showing deep thought about the choir, its history and future, and its place in contemporary Australia."
We were pleased to have Peter Hurley of Classic Melbourne in the audience at our recent 'Australian Sounds' concert, and were delighted to read his review.
The Australian Boys Choir takes the best aspects of music, artistic endeavour, talent, inspiration, and education to create a unique programme of musical training for boys and young men. Through 84 years of musical excellence, we have strived to achieve our mission.
What a wonderful year for singing it has been so far. We’ve been treated to a host of uplifting and inspiring concerts, topped off by an international tour to Aotearoa/New Zealand. All the while, our singers have learned new skills, perfected current skills and grown as both singers and individuals.
The ABCI was proud to resume touring internationally in our 85th anniversary year. Forty-five young people and five adults gathered at Melbourne Airport on September 21, for eight days in New Zealand. Despite the 6:00am sign-in time, everyone was all set... luggage packed and smiles on their faces.
